Boeing Loses 737 Orders From Dubai Aerospace Enterprises

A cancellation pegged by analysts to Dubai Aerospace Enterprises has reduced Boeing’s net 737 order book by 35 aircraft, meaning its hot-selling 777s are on a net order par with its single-aisle family.

DAE, which in December 2007 placed orders with Airbus and Boeing for some 200 single- and twin-aisle transports but subsequently ran into a financial brick wall, canceled 32 orders from Boeing in February. Earlier this month, it dropped 45 orders from Airbus.

The cancellation was revealed Thursday, when Boeing updated its orders website, which is current through July 12. It did not reveal the identify of the customers, but analysts say it is Dubai Aerospace.

Meanwhile, the website added two orders from VIP customers, one each for custom-made 737 and 747-8 Boeing Business Jets.

Counting 94 cancellations thus far, this year’s net order book for all model types stands at 138, compared with 640 through June for Airbus.

Normally, 737s account for about 65% of all Boeing orders. But this year they are barely 50% as the industry’s attention has shifted to the more than 1,000 orders and commitments Airbus has taken for the competing A320NEO program.

With a total of 72 cancellations, Boeing has recorded just 70 net 737 orders in 2011, exactly the same count as for its 777 family, which has a list price about four times higher but has suffered only two cancellations.

However, with 2,100 unfilled 737 orders and 291 777s, Boeing is planning production rate increases for both over the next three years
